Trinity Anglican School’s commitment to sustainability has been recognised with the TAS White Rock Primary Campus receiving the prestigious 2024 5-Star Sustainability Program Award. At TAS, sustainability is more than just a concept; it’s embedded into everyday school life. Through the Primary Round Square Initiative, TAS has integrated environmental responsibility into its culture, engaging students, staff, and the wider community. 

Head of Primary School, Peter Gazzola, regularly demonstrates this commitment by working in the school’s native garden alongside students. “When the students see me out there, they naturally want to get involved,” Gazzola says. “It’s not just about talking; it’s about showing them that sustainability is important to all of us.” 

This hands-on approach extends across year levels, with students from Years 3 to 6 participating in environmental projects together. This encourages leadership and reinforces sustainability as a key school value. 

Sustainability in Action 

Sustainability at TAS goes beyond the classroom, incorporating practical projects such as recycling programs, organic gardens, and water conservation. These initiatives give students valuable hands-on experience while teaching them the importance of environmental stewardship. Gazzola highlights the need for schools to embrace sustainability, saying, “It’s our responsibility to make these issues real for students and embed them in everything we do.” 

Overcoming Challenges and Achieving Success 

Implementing sustainability at TAS wasn’t without its challenges, particularly in securing resources and shifting mindsets. However, strong community support and student enthusiasm have led to significant achievements. Waste reduction, water conservation, and increased biodiversity are just a few examples of the program’s success. 

The program also empowers students to lead their own projects, such as recycling drives, beach clean-ups, and tree planting, fostering a strong sense of ownership and responsibility. 

Looking Ahead 

TAS remains committed to expanding its sustainability efforts. Future plans include increasing green spaces, exploring renewable energy options, and enhancing student-led initiatives. Continued partnerships with local organisations will further strengthen these efforts.
