Embracing IDEALS: The Value of Trinity Anglican School’s Round Square Membership

TAS joined the Round Square Organisation in 2000 as a candidate school, achieving Global membership in 2004. TAS joined a global network of over 250 like-minded institutions committed to the six themes of international understanding, democracy, environmental stewardship, adventure, leadership, and service—collectively known as IDEALS. This affiliation enriches our community by encouraging students to explore these themes in their daily lives, fostering a culture of empathy and responsibility that extends beyond the classroom.
This year, two of our students, Jenny (Year 10) and Ella (Year 11), had the remarkable opportunity to represent Trinity Anglican School at the annual international Round Square conference in Colombia. Under the theme “Blooming from the Past,” the conference emphasised the importance of understanding history to build a better future. Jenny reflected on the transformative journey of Colombia, a country that has embraced its past to foster growth and cultural diversity. Through service projects, workshops, and cultural exchanges, our students not only engaged with their peers from around the globe but also learned firsthand the value of community and collaboration.
The Round Square experience teaches young people invaluable life lessons. As they engage with diverse perspectives, students learn to navigate differences and cultivate mutual respect. Jenny shared her observations from her group, highlighting how delegates from various cultures expressed respect in unique ways, some through verbal communication, others through thoughtful gestures. This exposure fosters a deeper understanding of global citizenship, preparing students to thrive in an interconnected world.
Trinity Anglican’s involvement in Round Square also instils a sense of responsibility for the environment and society. Participating in service projects, like the Eat Up Program and water conservation projects, allows students to see the tangible impact of their contributions. They learn that meaningful change often begins with small, individual actions, reinforcing the idea that each of them can play a part in shaping a better future.
In conclusion, our school’s membership in Round Square not only enriches the educational experience of our students but also equips them with the skills and values necessary for effective leadership in a diverse world. As they embrace the IDEALS, students like Jenny and Ella emerge not only as learners but as active participants in the global community, committed to making a positive difference wherever they go.
