English as a Second Language (ESL)
Specialist ESL support may be offered to senior and junior school students who are learning English as a second language, to facilitate better access to mainstream classroom and subject curriculum content. Using a blended face to face and eLearning framework, the ESL program is designed to assist students with developing English language proficiency.
The ESL Program follows an integrated approach to teaching the four macro skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing through the use of activities that develop reading and comprehension skills, vocabulary, grammar knowledge and usage, writing skills, fluency, comprehension and the quality of pronunciation.
In the Junior School, students are assisted with the development of language based around classroom skills and topics. In the Senior School, assignment support is given during ESL sessions, as well as additional practice of regular English classroom activities. Particular guidance is given for oral presentations to assist with content, pronunciation and delivery.
ESL students at TAS are offered the opportunity to sit the TOEFL Primary or TOEFL Junior tests twice a year.
