Learning. Believing. Achieving – Term 3 Week 4

Date: August 4, 2017    Posted by: Sue Wicks

Please note: We have just released our P-10 digital technology overview for Semester 2 2017. This document allows teachers, students and parents to know where, what and how our students will gain these 21st century skills both within the timetabled curriculum, or through Clubs and Activities. The document is available on the school website here.

QAMT Maths Quiz

Last Monday night, our wonderful QAMT Maths team placed a very close 3rd overall in the Cairns District (out of approx 10 schools), being only narrowly defeated by St Mary's CC & Cairns SHS. As a place-getter in Round 1, our team moves through to the next round.

PSJ1

Our team of Michael Begg, Mohak Sengupta (both Yr8) and Tanay Pandey (Yr7) performed really well. In the "Speed" section (max 12 questions in 2 min.) the team achieved 11 correct out of 12, with 36 seconds to spare. Tanay's performance in mental arithmetic was "breathtaking" in terms of his speed of response, with several members of the audience visibly amazed. The team are kicking themselves that they got 6-5x2 incorrect though!!!! (They fell for one of the oldest tricks in the book...). A notable mention was Year 7 student Jinan Hassan, who, although being reserve on this night, still came along to support the team.

Round 2 will be hosted by St Andrew's Catholic College. My thanks to Mr Pacey and Ms Malcolm for their work with the mathematicians and for cheering the team on the night.

Athletics Carnival

Congratulations to the TAS Secondary Athletics team who won the Aggregate trophy at the recent TCS district athletics carnival. Some outstanding results on the day by TAS athletes:

  • Toby Gillen: set new records in both the 800m and 1500m
  • Abby Fowler: U/14 Girls 2nd Age Champion
  • Sarah Wonnacott: U/15 Girls 3rd Age champion
  • Chris Sutton: U/16 boys 2nd Age champion-
  • Josh Warwick-Anderson: U/18-19 Boys 3rd age champion

PSj2Also: Good luck to students Chantelle O'Reilly, Maya Shepherd, Will Holt, Reese Pyne and Todd Cotterill today at the Cairns Independent Athletics Carnival. We look forward to hearing how it went.

Murray Colbridge (Y8), Grace Belson (Y9), Shreya Ramesh Kumar (Y9), Navin Adikari (Y10), Tatsuki Terazawa (Y11), Yasin Adikari (Y12)

The following student was ranked in the top 1% of those students who sat ICAS across Australasia (High Distinctions):

Well done to all.

TAS Football

Congratulations to our mighty TAS Football U7 team ("The Lions!") - they participated and supported the local community at the Marlin Coast Football Club Carnival last Sunday. It was great to hear feedback regarding the way they represented our school on the day - well behaved, respectful, hard-working and outstanding sportsmanship. Well done players, coaches and parents.

PSJ3

Rugby

Luke with his “Life Members Award” for being Peninsula’s Player of the 14-15 YRS Rugby State Championships 2017 played in Townsville. Well done Luke.

PSJ4

Hockey

The TAS Boys Hockey team represented us proudly last week, competing in the Boys Hockey Gala Day at the Cairns Hockey Association. Our team narrowly missed out on a grand final berth, having lost their semi final against Redlynch. The boys team was comprised of Josh Fowler (c), Chris Sutton, Fletcher Le Sueur, Harry Pozzi, Kody Cotterill, Harry McLean, Sam Kwort, Elisha Robati, Gordon Milne & Griffin Haseldine. Great effort boys! Also a special mention to Mr Long, for giving his time to coach the boys.
