Learning. Believing. Achieving – Term 2 Week 9

Date: June 16, 2017    Posted by: Alana Ripepi

Just a reminder – keep up to date with what’s happening. Lots of news from TAS is posted on the official Facebook page: Trinity Anglican School, Cairns.

Readers Cup

Not only were they very well-prepared for the day, the TAS Readers’ Cup teams approached the occasion with a growth mindset, and were fantastic ambassadors for Trinity Anglican School. The students answered many questions in a quiz-like situation, about the 6 books they read over a period of 6 weeks. WRJ placed a very respectable 8th and KBJ 13th in a field of over 40 schools! Occasions like Readers’ Cup reaffirm for us how cool it is to be good at reading!

Art and the Environment

Caitlyn Mock in Year 4S at WRJ created a magnificent three-dimensional art work, a koala, from recyclable materials. She has entered it in the “Keep it Wild” eco-art competition run by the Wet Tropics organisation. All the work was done in her spare time, outside of school. I’m sure you’ll agree she has been very creative, environmentally-friendly and demonstrated excellent time management! Thanks to the support provided by Wendy Ashburton and Liane Thomas.

Swimming News

Three of our students have been selected onto Swimming Queensland Development Squads: Ella Goddard (Flippers Squad), Harriet Grant (Junior Development Squad) and Flynn Martin (Junior Development Squad). Ella is the only able-bodied athlete in the FNQ region to make the Flippers Squad which is the highest Age Group Squad available. She is currently 2 seconds away in the 400m Free from making the Silver Open Squad. Places on that squad are offered to swimmers within 6% of the 2015 Final WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP time in their respective events.

We welcome Ashley Callus (Sydney 2000 Olympic Games Gold medallist) to bring his group here to train in the lead in to this year’s World Championships in Hungary that start in July. It is good to see top level swimmers using our facility as a training venue. The squad currently training in the TAS Aquatic Centre consists of: JAMES ROBERTS (World Championship Team), BEN TREFFERS (World University Games Team), YOLANE KUKLA (Olympian) and LUKE PERCY (World Junior 50m Freestyle Champion). For those who are not sure who Ashley Callus is, it is worth refreshing your memory of one of Australia’s greatest relay swimming victories in history here

WRJ Prep Market Day

What a terrific morning on Wednesday at White Rock Junior. Lots of Prep students and parents having great fun and learning about buying and selling, and practicing their maths, at the market day. Great to see the petting farm animals there also. Thanks to Ms Rankin and Ms Dunn and all the helpers.

KBJ Music Concert

What a terrific array of talent on display at the recent KBJ Music concert. It was great to see so many students of various ages and abilities having the confidence and courage to play before the enthusiastic audience. Well done all involved and thanks to our wonderful, dedicated music staff.
