The TAS Aquatic Centre hosts SLSC royalty!
It was great to see the North Queensland Branch of Surf Life Saving Queensland at the TAS Aquatic Centre last weekend holding a clinic for members of the 5 local clubs. TAS students Harriet Grant, Hayden Telford, Ella Goddard, Lila Horobin, Kiana Turnbull and Max Telford were willing participants.
We greatly value our close association with NQB SLSQ. It was great to have such high profile athletes and coaches come up from down south to coach local lifesavers. Toby Wilson is a member of the QLD Cyclones Team and is the current National Open Male 2K Swim Champion and the World Open Male 200m Obstacle Champion. Brielle Wilson is a member of the QLD Cyclones Team and was the second youngest (at 18yo) to be a finalist at this season’s Nutri-grain Ironwoman Series and Emma Jackson, who is also a member of the QLD Cyclones, has previously won gold at Nationals and is a current record hold at the National Pool Rescue Championships. Finally Melinda Jackson who is Head Pool Rescue Coach at Northcliffe SLSC and is a coach on the QLD Cyclones Team, as well as coaching at the World Youth Championships.
It was a beautiful morning at St Margaret’s, West Cairns on Sunday with the baptism of 3 youngsters. Rev’d Ford led the service for a large, enthusiastic congregation.
It is great to see the Anglican Church presence and activity in the Cairns region. Families who would like to attend Anglican worship on Sunday have a number of options:
- TAS WR (St Francis’) – 7:00am each Sunday
- TAS KB (St Peter’s) – 8:30am each Sunday
- Gordonvale (All Saints) – 9:00am each Sunday
- West Cairns (St Margaret’s) – 7:00am and 9:00am each Sunday
- Cairns – (St John’s) – 7:00am and 9:00am each Sunday
- Edge Hill – (The Good Shepherd) – 7:00am, 9:30am and 5:00pm each Sunday
- Kuranda – (St Saviour’s ) 8:00am, 9:30am and 5:00pm each Sunday
If you are interested in Baptism or Confirmation programs, please let me know and we can investigate possible options with our local churches.
FNQ Chess Championships
The second round of the Far North Queensland Interschool Chess Championships were held the Bishop Centre at TAS White Rock on the 18 May. Over 300 students from the Cairns region competed (which was a new record for this competition). TAS Chess players achieved outstanding results and displayed the positive behaviours and attitudes that our school is renowned for.
My thanks to Mr David Long for his passion and vision growing Chess at TAS. The participation rates of Chess at TAS in the Junior School are extraordinary (as many would know, there is a significant amount of research that shows the link between playing Chess and improvements in IQ, mathematics grades, problem-solving ability, and concentration skills). In addition, thanks to Mr Robert Lade for his leadership of the Kewarra Beach Chess program.

Student congratulations – Sophie Kalkowski-Pope
On Tuesday the 16nd of May Sophie Kalkowski-Pope shared her presentation on coral bleaching to the Cairns Local Marine Advisory Committee. This video and speech had previously been presented to senior students at TAS school assembly. It is a very well-constructed and presented piece. You can view the video at https://vimeo.com/escapee/coralbleaching
Sophie writes: “Attending the meeting allowed me to share my personal observations and prompt constructive discussion with like-minded people in the marine community. Interaction with these innovative minds along with the formation of industry connections was a highlight of being invited to speak on this topical environmental issue. There is now potential for this video to be shared to Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority marine advisory groups throughout Queensland.
I am very grateful to have had the chance to spread awareness of the stresses on our reef and discuss this issue with community leaders in Cairns. As such, I and would like to extend a note of appreciation to Darren Osmond and Tim Trehearn for supporting and facilitating the presentation of the video to a wider audience.”
